The New York Times had an interesting article about flat fees and divorces the other day. Some courts around the country are looking for ways to streamline the divorce process for people who do not have high-conflict or high-asset relationships and that is probably a good thing.
A “one-day divorce” is not going to happen anytime soon, though, at least not as soon this article seems to think. On the other hand, for some people, there may be short-cuts of sorts to avoid the long, expensive route of getting through this process. (For an example, read my blog about the 10-Minute Divorce.)
Vermont has not taken any particular steps like the ones California is testing, but for many Vermonters, flat fees are an affordable alternative to paying lawyers by the hour for representation.
I offer flat fees for a number of family law services over at my law firm website. You can see my flat fee divorce rates.
